Paper Dolls

Paper dolls are figures or animals that are either drawn or printed on paper. They can be either two dimensional or three dimensional. Paper dolls usually come with cutouts of different clothes and accessories and the user can change outfits at will. You can either make paper dolls or purchase them in completed sets. However, most die-hard paper doll collectors consider the two-dimensional styles to be the true paper doll.

The History of Paper Dolls

Paper dolls offer us a glimpse into the life and costumes of another time. They span back to at least 900 A.D and their popularity throughout the centuries has been notable. Some cultures have used them for ceremonies, others for pleasure, and others to depict various historical figures. They were a popular fad in the French courts in the 1700s and other countries throughout Europe also embraced them.

Some believe that they were an integral part of the fashionable cities of Europe including Berlin and Vienna. Some clothing makers probably used them to showcase their collections. Other people used paper dolls to make satirical comments and observations about popular political and social figures. Their popularity continues even today.

Paper Dolls in Magazines

Certain magazines helped contribute to the popularity of paper dolls starting in the mid 1800s. The first magazine to print a paper doll was called Godeys Ladys Book. These paper doll images were black and white and provided a great coloring activity for children. They were responsible for starting this trend and though the magazine only printed one series, other magazines copied the idea.

Paper Dolls Today

Modern paper doll history first began in the United States when paper dolls were imported from Europe. The first celebrity dolls included figures such as Martha Washington and Queen Victoria. Now, collectors can find paper dolls in magazines, through paper doll specialty manufacturers, on the internet, comic books, etc. You can find dolls on historical figures, celebrities, or just depicting everyday people and scenes. With the proper care, these paper dolls can last. You can also make your own paper dolls if you have the skill.
